Hungarian Jewish Committee Raises Voice against Anti-Christian Vandalism

Hungary Today 2024.01.08.

The statue of the Holy Mary in Dunavecse (Southern Great Plain region) was vandalized on New Year’s Eve, the local Roman Catholic parish reported on its social media page.

At dawn of December 31, 2023, an unknown offender smashed the head of the statue of Mary to pieces with premeditated intent. The statue was due to be consecrated on January 1.

“It is hard to find words, our hearts are breaking and we do not understand why this happened. Tomorrow there will be a candle-lighting at the roundabout at 3 p.m. and a Holy Mass at 3:30 p.m. Let us pray for peace, for the healing of sick souls/minds, for the victory of the Immaculate Heart of Mary,” the parish said in its statement.

The Memorial Committee for Hungarian Jewish Freedom Fighters (MAZSISZEM) issued a statement condemning the events and standing by the congregation of Dunavecse.

Dániel Imre Rosenfeld, a bible teacher of high level, expressed his thoughts via telephone to the leader of the community, Father Gergő Bese,

as a religious Hungarian-Jewish man, his solidarity against this deliberate and shameful anti-Christian crime.”

The two leaders also agreed to jointly hold an ecumenical prayer service in February in the spirit of peace and unity for the glory of God.
