According to the latest results of the National Media and Infocommunications Authority’s (NMHH) annual consumer survey, 41% of the population aged 15 and over were regularly watching video content on a streaming service by the end of last year. This suggests that streaming’s growth in Hungary is unstoppable.

According to Magyar Nemzet, the NMHH survey indicates that the total user base is even larger, as many people take advantage of the free trial period offered by almost all operators. These individuals watch films for a few weeks or a month without a subscription but do not become regular users. This group tends to be the largest for new operators. For example, when RTL+ was launched in 2023, twice as many people watched its programs without paying for them as those who eventually subscribed.

The usage patterns of different age groups in streaming are also notable. Younger demographics, who tend to adopt innovative services more readily, are more inclined to stream content than watch traditional TV.

In contrast, middle-aged and older individuals still prefer television.

This discrepancy is partly due to the internet subscription requirement for streaming services, with only around half of people aged 60 and over being internet users in 2023.

Additionally, the survey reveals that an increasing number of people are subscribing to multiple streaming platforms. About half of streaming users subscribe to two to four channels, indicating a diversification in viewing habits.

The affordability of streaming services contributes to this trend. While leading channels overseas are beginning to run commercials and offer ad-free access with higher-priced packages,

Hungary’s major providers are generally available from HUF 2,000-3,000 (EUR 5-7.70) per month.

Smaller platforms can be even cheaper. Comparatively, Hungarian households paid an average of HUF 4,600 (EUR 11.8) per month for traditional TV subscriptions in 2023. Consequently, many individuals are considering switching to streaming as it offers more value for their money.
