New Highway to Open Months Ahead of Schedule in the Lake Balaton Area

Hungary Today 2023.11.16.

The development of highway 67 has entered its final phase, and as soon as the Látrány bypass is completed, motorists will be able to drive from Kaposvár to Lake Balaton, Világgazdaság reports. According to the paper, the section could be opened to traffic as early as this weekend.

The experts are already putting the finishing touches to the works in Western Hungary, but they are still working on the section between Balatonszemes and Somogybabod. The side leading to Lake Balaton has been closed for this reason, and those coming from Kaposvár can take the Somogytúr-Látrány-Balatonlelle route.

Construction of the first major 33.2-kilometer section of the highway, named R67, began in 2017, and was completed by autumn 2019, with a total investment of HUF 65 billion (EUR 172 million)

by Strabag Építő Kft., Strabag AG, and Soltút Kft. The development also included the Kaposfüred and Látrány bypasses. The former, which is three kilometers long and cost HUF 8 billion (EUR 21 million) to complete, was opened to motorists last December.

The 10.2-kilometer Látrány bypass was originally planned to be opened to traffic only in February 2024,

thus the contractor Strabag can report the work ready months before the deadline. However, what is more important, is that it will complete the connection of Kaposvár to the M7 motorway.

Road 67 has become famous as a musical road, after the well-know Hungarian rock band Republic’s song “A 67-es út” (Road 67) was played in the outer lane of the section between Mernye and Mernyeszentmiklós, for about 500 meters at a certain speed.
