Champions League: Permission Must be Sought to Broadcast Matches in Pubs

Hungary Today 2023.06.14.

As reported by Világgazdaság, RTL, a commercial broadcaster, has acquired the rights to broadcast one of the world’s most prestigious sporting events in Hungary between 2024 and 2027.

This is a big change, as since 2015, public media has been broadcasting the matches free of charge to all TV viewers. After the news broke, it soon became clear that the commercial broadcaster would mainly carry the Champions League on its pay-TV streaming platform RTL+. True, in the meantime, RTL has seemed to soften its stance in the face of consumer reaction and announced that

the final and semi-finals would remain on TV.

In any case, in practice this would mean that next year most matches would only be available if viewers paid extra. RTL+ currently offers its content for HUF 1,990 per month, which is likely to increase from 2024.

How will you be able to watch the Champions League in pubs?

Media1 reached out to RTL asking whether it would be possible to watch Champions League matches in public places such as pubs and restaurants. In their response they emphasized that any commercial, business, or any use for direct or indirect gainful use or public use requires our prior written consent.

RTL has therefore made it clear that even if a private individual has a subscription to RTL+, he or she cannot make the content publicly available. “According to RTL+’s terms and conditions, we only contract with natural persons who are consumers of RTL+ and we only allow private use.

The granting, refusal, or revocation of a license and any other terms of the license will be decided on an individual basis at our sole discretion,”

they stated. It can be inferred from the above that even if RTL authorizes a particular host to share RTL+ content, it may charge a fee for doing so. However, this has not been confirmed by the commercial channel, so this is still speculation for the time being. RTL has indicated that from the 2024-25 season onwards, RTL+ will provide more information on the public screening of matches before the season.
