National Football Team on a Paved Road to European Championship

MTI-Hungary Today 2023.06.13.

The Hungarian football team has an 80 percent chance of qualifying for next year’s tournament before the European Championship qualifiers in June, according to an analysis by statistics company Gracenote.

The last time the company published its forecast before the qualifiers was in March, when Marco Rossi’s side had a 74 percent chance of reaching the tournament’s finals.

This value increased further after the 3-0 home win against Bulgaria.

Gracenote’s analysis shows that six teams are all but assured of qualifying for the tournament: the Swiss, Portuguese, and the French, who have 100 percent odds after two matches, have a 98 percent chance of qualifying for the tournament; the English and Belgians have 97 percent, while the top-ranked Serbians, who play in the same group as Hungary, have a 96 percent chance of qualifying for the tournament in Germany.

As host, Germany automatically qualifies for the 2024 European Championship. The top two teams from each of the ten qualifying groups qualify in direct matches, with the remaining three places going to the knockout stages.

The next test for the Hungarian team will be Saturday’s match with Montenegro.

Ádám Lang, the national team’s central defender, expects a tough battle in Montenegro, but believes the Hungarian national football team can take the three points from Saturday’s European Championship qualifier if they stay focused. “We will be tested by the opponent’s style of play and the character of the players, we will have to deal with possible annoyances and provocations, they must not get the upper hand, we have to play our own game and be competitive in the matches. I think we will do that,” the 57-time national team defender said at the press conference on Monday.

“Communication plays an important role on the field- I call that responsibility.

We have become a real team, we have to help each other, every little detail can be important,”

he said.

The squad is almost complete, with only Philadelphia Union forward Dániel Gazdag absent after missing his flight after the weekend’s game and not arriving at the training camp in Telki until Tuesday.

Hungary’s Group G team, which started qualifying in March, plays in Podgorica on Saturday before hosting Lithuania at Puskás Arena three days later.
