According to Mandiner, the head of State, Tamás Sulyok, met with Pope Francis on Thursday. Alongside the recently inaugurated President, the Holy Father will also host pilgrims from the National Pilgrimage for an audience. President Sulyok will attend the papal audience with his wife and children.
To Hungarian journalists present, the President highlighted discussions with Pope Francis on the topic of communities and their future. He mentioned a personal aspect of their conversation, focusing on a message from the Pope’s speech during his visit to Budapest. Pope Francis referenced an exhortation from St. Stephen, emphasizing the importance of gentleness and truth.
President Sulyok found this message particularly meaningful and asked Pope Francis if he could adopt it as a personal motto, to which the Pope gladly agreed.
The Head of State presented the Pope with several gifts, including a beautifully ornate copy of the Chronicon Pictum, a matyó emroidered tablecloth, and painted eggs in a decorative box. He also shared the legend of the matyó embroidery. As an additional gesture, he brought the book King Stephen’s Admonitions to Prince Emeric to the Vatican, fulfilling a request made by Pope Francis during his previous visit to Hungary.
Tamás Sulyok participated in the audience with Pope Francis for the Hungarian National Pilgrimage and later attended the closing mass in St. Peter’s Basilica.
The Hungarian National Pilgrimage, organized by the Hungarian Catholic Bishops’ Conference, drew 1,500 participants from Hungary, its border regions, and Hungarian communities in the West. This pilgrimage served as a gesture of gratitude for Pope Francis’ apostolic visit to Budapest on April 28-30 last year.
Additionally, on Friday, the President is scheduled to hold talks with Fra John Dunlap, Grand Master of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta.
