As forecasted, extensive cloud cover reached the Hungarian capital on Thursday, and heavy snowfall began in and around Budapest due to sub-zero temperatures.

In the capital, snow started falling in large flakes at around 9 a.m. yesterday and covered everything in almost half an hour. The snowfall lasted for several hours, creating a beautiful winter wonderland.

The Christmas tree on the square in front of St Stephen’s Basilica also looked magnificent covered in snow. The square is hosting a Christmas market called Advent Basilica, which last year won the title of Europe’s Best Christmas Market. The Christmas market is open until January 1.

Unfortunately, the beautiful snowy landscape will not remain for today, as the National Meteorological Service has issued a second-level alert for Budapest and several Pest County districts due to the risk of persistent, several hours-long freezing rain.
