The Hungarian government will “do everything to protect its economic achievements”, Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó said on Friday.
The proposed ban on Russian oil deliveries would compromise Hungary’s energy security and ruin the national economy, the minister insisted.
“We must not allow anyone to destroy the results of Hungarians’ decade-long efforts,” Szijjártó said. He said the government considered the ruling parties’ winning the recent election as “confirmation of the past twelve years’ economic policy”. That policy helped build a work-based society, while “the government has never had to resort to austerity measures and Hungary was stronger after each crisis” he said.
Despite the recent coronavirus and resulting economic crises Hungary saw a record GDP growth in 2021, while investments, exports and employment also hit record levels, Szijjártó said.
“From the dunce’s seat of Europe we have come to the forefront, now having the fastest growing economy on the continent,” he said.
Szijjártó spoke at a ceremony marking completion of an investment project by engineering company Pata in Fajsz, in western Hungary. The project used a budget of 303 million forints (EUR 796,000), including a 137 million forint government grant, and has helped save 115 jobs.
