President Novák Approves Law on Protection of National Sovereignty

MTI-Hungary Today 2023.12.21.

President of the Republic Katalin Novák has ordered the promulgation of the law on the protection of national sovereignty. At the same time, she exercised her veto right and sent the law on the sustainable development of certain elements of cultural heritage to the Constitutional Court, the Sándor Palace Communications Directorate informed MTI on Wednesday.

The summary notes that parliament passed several significant laws last week, such as those on tax exemption for real estate purchased with CSOK Plus, the digital state, additional childcare leave, and Hungarian architecture.

According to the statement, the Hungarian President has received several inquiries from home and abroad regarding the law on the protection of national sovereignty. The messages received from abroad confirm the correctness of the objective set by parliament: the need to protect national identity and sovereignty. However, the wording of the law has been criticized by many. “It must be made clear that the scope of the investigation of the office to be set up must be interpreted in accordance with the Constitution.

The Office for the Protection of Sovereignty will properly fulfill its mission as defined in the Constitution if its activities do not affect the freedom of the press or freedom of expression. The President of the Republic has ordered the promulgation of the law,”

the statement reads.

Katalin Novák also used her veto to send the law on the sustainable development of certain elements of cultural heritage to the Constitutional Court. Although the concept of “adoption” of state castles is a supportable one, the provisions of the law allow for private ownership without the legislator having fully defined the guaranteed rules to ensure adequate protection of national property, the statement argues.
