Parliament Votes on the Twelfth Amendment to the Constitution

MTI-Hungary Today 2023.12.12.

Several laws requiring two-thirds majority may be adopted by the Parliament today, December 12. Among other issues, decision will be taken on an amendment of the Constitution on the protection of national sovereignty.

The draft is aimed at

safeguarding national sovereignty and outlines the establishment of the Office for the Protection of Sovereignty.

This independent state administration body would be tasked with analyzing, evaluating, proposing, and investigating foreign interference in state, social, and political decision-making processes. Additionally, it would address foreign-backed attempts to influence electoral processes.

Furthermore, the proposed change empowers the government to regulate the fundamental rights and obligations of active members of the Hungarian Defense Forces through a government decree rather than a law.

After the voting, the debate on the proposed law on certain questions of public authority will be held in exceptional procedure.
