The winners of the 31st National Youth Science and Innovation Competition, Anna Nóra Kovács from Cluj-Napoca (Kolozsvár) and László Benedek Barna from Budapest, will represent Hungary at the International Science and Engineering Fair, the World Youth Science Championship, in Dallas starting on May 14 – the Hungarian Innovation Association (MISZ) informed MTI.
Over 1700 high school students from different countries of the world will compete for a total prize money of almost 9 million dollars. János Pakucs, honorary president of MISZ and organizer of the Hungarian Youth Science Competitions, said in the statement that the two students had developed excellent research projects that could be applied in various fields.
Nóra-Anna Kovács is starting with a project called “Rusty,” which aims to reduce pollution. With the first prototype, she aims to detect and monitor discarded waste using small robots optimized for image recognition and processing.

László Benedek Barna will demonstrate his engineering expertise with his project “Development of a UV illumination system for photochemical ligand coupling.” The UV Covbel is a medical device for labeling proteins, a so-called ligand-based photochemical labeling. The protein is illuminated by a UV LED, creating a label on the protein that lasts and can be studied for a long time, according to the Hungarian Innovation Association.
