Romanian Man Arrested for Vandalizing Religious Statue in Dunavecse Twice

Hungary Today 2024.01.12.

The Kunszentmiklós District Prosecutor’s Office has requested the arrest of a man for vandalism by destroying an object of religious veneration.

On New Year’s Eve in Dunavecse (Great Plain Region of Hungary), the offender once again vandalized the statue of the Virgin Mary, damaged and restored by him last May. It is suspected that last year the man also damaged the statue of Our Lady of Medjugorje erected by the local Roman Catholic parish.

After restoring the religious statue, the Romanian man smashed the headpiece again with an unknown object at dawn on New Year’s Eve.

With exemplary speed, the police in Kunszentmiklós identified and arrested the suspect, who was taken into custody and charged with two counts of criminal damage to a religious object of veneration.

The prosecutor’s office requested the arrest of the criminal offender due to the risk of escape and concealment, as well as to prevent the recurrence of the crime and the unlawful influence of the proceedings.

The investigating magistrate of the Kecskemét District Court today ordered the man’s arrest for 1 month due to the risk of unlawful interference with proceedings and to prevent a repeat offense.
