If everything goes well, a meeting of Hungarian and Ukrainian foreign ministers could take place on January 29 in Uzhorod (Ungvár, Transcarpathia, Ukraine), during which the parties will review issues of bilateral cooperation, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó announced.
According to the ministry’s press statement, the minister said in response to a journalist’s question at a press conference with his Montenegrin counterpart Filip Ivanovic that a possible Hungarian-Ukrainian summit would only make sense if it could lead to significant results, and for this to happen, proper preparation is needed.
To this end, he and his Ukrainian counterpart Dmytro Kuleba are scheduled to meet in Uzhorod on January 29 to review the above-mentioned issues from beginning to end and to see whether the high-level meeting could help to move relations forward.
I am ready, I will continue to give the maximum possible protection to that day in the calendar, so January 29 is now in principle for both of us to meet in Uzhorod,”
said Minister Szijjártó.
He also said that he would be happy to meet with Andriy Yermak, the head of the Ukrainian presidential administration, but that no date had yet been proposed.
I am here waiting for a proposal for a date, and then I will meet with him, if necessary. If it is enough with Minister Kuleba, that is of course an internal decision of Ukraine, we will not interfere,”
he added.
Péter Szijjártó called for avoiding a “bazaar atmosphere” on the issue of frozen EU funds.
He underlined that funds are the result of the work of the citizens of the EU, including the Hungarians, and their distribution should be based on legislation, whereas this is not the case now, but a significant part of the money due to Hungary is still being blocked for political reasons.
“This is completely independent of any country that wants to join (the EU), so our demand remains clear: give us the EU funds,” he concluded.
