Budapest Airport Prepares to Abolish Restrictions on Liquids

After Milan Linate Airport, Rome Fiumicino International Airport, and London City Airport recently announced that they might lift the restrictions on liquids in hand luggage, news portal 24.hu has contacted the operator of Budapest Airport.

As is known, passengers at most airports in the world are allowed to carry liquids in containers of no more than 100 ml, which must be placed in a transparent, resealable plastic bag with a capacity of no more than one liter. In many cases, this causes inconvenience for passengers, who are often forced to discard liquids in excess of the permitted amount, thus slowing down the check-in process.

Budapest Airport told the website that as with all security checks,

the restriction on the amount of liquids allowed on board is justified by the need to ensure flight safety and full compliance with EU regulations.

In August 2006, UK authorities prevented terrorist attacks on aircraft in which liquid explosives in beverage bottles were to be detonated in flight. To prevent these situations, the European Union decided in 2006 to restrict the carrying of liquids on board aircraft.

The limit of 10×100 ml, applied at Budapest Airport, can be waived if the airport installs a CT security scanner for checking hand luggage, enabling effective control of liquids. Budapest Airport, like many other European airports, has also already tested a CT (computed tomography) security scanner.

The new system could be deployed in Terminal 1 within two years.

The terminal building is currently awaiting building permits to reopen. The company said back in February that the doubled and refurbished Terminal 1 is on schedule to open no later than summer 2025, in line with forecasts, to “handle growing passenger volumes with the usual high quality of service.”

The special CT equipment, equipped with an explosives detection system, is manufactured by British company Smiths Detection and has already been installed at Rome Airport. According to the company’s website, it specializes in threat detection technologies and its scanners provide the highest level of security at a low cost of ownership. The use of CT equipment also significantly reduces screening time. X-ray scanners are used to create a computer tomography of the luggage, producing high-resolution 3D images. The system automatically detects potentially hazardous substances, which would significantly speed up and simplify the work of control personnel.
