Illegal Migrants Attacking Police With Stones at the Southern Border

Hungary Today 2023.08.30.

The activity of illegal migrants on the Hungarian-Serbian border is extraordinary, the Prime Minister’s Chief Advisor on Homeland Security said on Kossuth Radio’s program “Good Morning, Hungary!”. György Bakondi reported that groups of 140-180 people are coming over the fence with ladders and attempting to overrun the police, while people smugglers are also active, trying to transport those who have crossed, reports Hirado.hu.

“The police and the border hunters are fighting,” said the chief adviser. He pointed out that illegal migrants regularly attack police vehicles and police officers with wooden sticks, stones and slingshot bullets. So far this year, seven officers have been injured.

György Bakondi drew attention to the fact that in Serbia, near the border, “weapons have appeared” and “the public security situation has become critical”.

At first, criminal gangs only fought each other with knives, pistols and submachine guns in the outskirts, but now they have also appeared in populated areas and have started shooting.

He mentioned a recent hand grenade attack on the house of a man who has frequently condemned illegal migration on social media.

This is noteworthy because it is the first time since 2015 that criminal gangs have deliberately targeted the population, marking the beginning of a new and dangerous period.

Fact

At the beginning of August, a hand grenade attack occurred in Hajdújárás (Hajdukovo, Serbia), near the Hungarian border. The attack was aimed at a house belonging to a young family, and the owner, who asked not to be named, said that the attack was aimed at him because he is the one in the village who speaks out against illegal migration the most fervently, posting his opinion on social media as well.

Violence is not without precedent along the Hungarian-Serbian border among illegal migrants, with weapons, ammunition, and explosives being found in the hands of border crossers. In Vojvodina, Serbia, explosion and shooting has been heard lately, where migrant gangs are believed to have clashed. In recent weeks, there have been a series of incidents in which the sound of hand grenades or machine guns has been heard by locals. “I heard a huge explosion, it sounded like a bomb had been dropped, the ground shook and now we are starting to fear the migrants,” said a local woman.

As to how to fight illegal immigration, György Bakondi thinks that that next year’s European Parliament elections could bring a change in the situation. The right-wing could have a parliamentary majority and a European Commission that would give illegal migration the weight it deserves in terms of its danger and security risk, he emphasized.
