Member of an Afghan Human Trafficking Ring under Arrest

MTI-Hungary Today 2024.04.10.

An Afghan man suspected of aiding hundreds of illegal migrants entering Hungary from Serbia between March and August 2023, has been apprehended in Hungary on charges of human trafficking, as reported by the Standby Police’s National Bureau of Investigation (KR NNI).

The man was detained in Belgrade by Serbian police in a joint international operation and subsequently transferred to investigators from the Szeged Branch of the NNI at the Röszke Border Crossing Point (southern Hungary) on April 2. His arrest was ordered by the Szeged District Court on April 4, and has been identified as N. Bismilah.

Allegedly, the Afghan man operated as part of a criminal organization with several yet unidentified accomplices.

The group’s tasks were hierarchically assigned, and they refrained from using mobile phones, and covered their faces with scarves and masks. They displayed aggression toward patrols, hurling stones and sticks, as reported by police.hu.

Furthermore, the man and his associates damaged a temporary security barrier in Ásotthalom to facilitate migrant passage, dismantling barbed wire and obscuring it with cloth and blankets. They even supplied ladders and signage for migrants at the fence.

Thanks to border surveillance camera footage analysis and collaboration with Serbian authorities, the Afghan man was identified, leading to the issuance of an international arrest warrant by the Szeged District Court and his subsequent arrest in Belgrade.

The Investigative Prosecution Office of Szeged initiated proceedings against the man for violence against an official.

Additionally, the KR NNI reported successful apprehensions based on two other European Arrest Warrants linked to human trafficking cases – one in Germany and another in the Netherlands. On March 19, German authorities extradited a Syrian citizen to Hungary, while on March 28, Dutch authorities handed over a Ukrainian citizen. Both suspects are under investigation by the KR NNI following their arrests.
