Hungary on the Brink of Having a Seaport

Hungary Today 2023.07.20.

The competent authority has approved the creation of a pier on the Hungarian-owned terminal, bringing Hungary one step closer to realizing its plans regarding the Port of Trieste. Hungarian companies will be able to use it from 2026 – reports Index.hu.

The technical and economic feasibility plans for the creation of a pier on the Hungarian state-owned terminal have been approved by the Trieste port authority. In parallel, the evaluation of the tender works has started, and in the near future it may be decided who will be entrusted with the construction.

The primary task of the winning company will be to make the canal navigable. In addition, the first phase of the project will include a solution to connect the canal to the road network. This is expected to cost €45 million. The Hungarian government was able to acquire the Trieste port terminal as of January 2021, and already in 2019, it provided €11.2 billion to Adria Port, the company that will develop the port.

Fact

Adria Port Inc. is a company owned 100% by the Hungarian State. The mission of Adria Port is to implement Hungary’s port development project in the port of  Trieste, Italy, thereby promoting Hungary’s foreign trade, developing the logistics network for  the benefit of the Hungarian economy and contributing to sustainable economic  development.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade exercises control over the Company.

The terminal was previously used by the oil refinery Aquila for refining and hydrocarbon handling, but in recent years it has become derelict, a kind of rust belt. Péter Szijjártó, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, said at the end of last year that

Hungarian companies will be able to use the Trieste port terminal for their export activities from 2026.

Italy has already received €45 million from the recovery fund to develop the affected stretch of coastline, and the cost of dredging the sea bed could also be covered from this sum.
