Gebrüder Weiss Kft. is the first to test a hydrogen-powered truck in Hungary. Bálint Varga, Managing Director of Gebrüder Weiss Kft (GW), announced today that the Hyundai XCIENT truck will be delivering shipments to GW customers without carbon dioxide emissions with the help of Linde Gas Hungary Zrt, Világgazdaság reports.

Bálint Varga presented the vehicle with a payload capacity of 17 tons and a range of 400 kilometers at a press conference. As he said, Gebrüder Weiss is one of the first in the world to use a truck powered by green hydrogen, which has been successfully operating in Switzerland for two years.

The experience has been excellent: the truck, with a gross weight of 36 tons, covers 70,000 kilometers a year, and with this one vehicle alone, it is already saving the environment 80 tons of carbon dioxide a year.

The Managing Director indicated that GW is adopting available green technologies, including electric, liquefied natural gas (LNG), and compressed natural gas (CNG), at the earliest stages of technology. It has recently started home deliveries with its own zero-emission vehicles in Budapest, Győr (north-western Hungary), Zalaegerszeg (western Hungary), Pécs (southwestern Hungary) and downtown Szeged (southern Hungary).

The first ten vehicles of the electric fleet have been put into service, with a further ten vans to follow in the second half of the year.

In the next phase, the company will purchase electric vehicles with a range of at least 250-300 kilometers, to be used in other parts of Hungary as well, like Miskolc (northeastern Hungary), Debrecen (eastern Hungary), and Nyíregyháza (northeastern Hungary).

Ákos Hegedüs, CEO of Linde Gáz Magyarország Zrt, presented the domestic refueling possibilities for hydrogen fuel and plans for the domestic production of green hydrogen. He said he hoped that buses and trains would soon be able to refuel with hydrogen at more domestic sites, as in many European countries. However, as of now, there is a lack of hydrogen refueling infrastructure in Europe.

Gebrüder Weiss Holding AG, a global full-service logistics company based in Lauterach (Austria), employs some 8,400 people and has 180 fully-owned sites.

Linde Gas Hungary is one of the largest domestic manufacturers of industrial, medical, and specialty gases and gas equipment.

It has the technology and expertise to exploit the potential of hydrogen and is one of the first suppliers of green hydrogen in Hungary.

It has installed more than 200 hydrogen filling stations and 80 hydrogen electrolysers worldwide and operates a network of hydrogen pipelines stretching over 1,000 kilometers. In Hungary, it has production capacity and filling plants in Budapest, Répcelak (western Hungary), Dunaújváros (central Hunagry), Kazincbarcika (northern Hungary) and Miskolc (northeastern Hungary).
