National Football Team Player Schäfer Extends Contract with Bundesliga Club

German Bundesliga side Union Berlin have announced on their official website that they have extended the contract of Hungarian international football player András Schäfer, writes Nemzeti Sport.

András Schäfer arrived at Union Berlin in January 2022, having previously spent time abroad with DAC, Genoa, and Chievo Verona. His contract was due to expire in May and has now been extended. No details of the deal were released by the club.

The 25-year-old midfielder has made 49 appearances for Union, scoring two goals and providing three assists.

This season so far, he has had one goal and one assist in 17 games and has also picked up a red card.

“Union are an exceptional club that have supported me, especially through my difficult phases,” Schäfer was quoted as saying by the club’s website. “I’m very happy to be back on the pitch for the club and I’m delighted to be able to continue doing so in the future.”

“With András, we are retaining a young player who has developed excellently and continues to show great development potential,” said Oliver Ruhnert, Union’s director of men’s professional football. “His performances this season show how important András is for the team, which is why we are delighted to have him in our ranks.”

With three rounds to go, Union Berlin is in 14th place in the league, in the relegation places. They are seven points ahead of 17th-placed Cologne, who are in the relegation zone, while they are two points ahead of Mainz, also in the relegation zone.

Schäfer’s current transfer value is between EUR 700,000 and EUR 1.1 million. His last transfer was from DAC to Union Berlin in 2022. Union Berlin paid DAC EUR 1 million for him.
