On Wednesday morning, a German police special commando raided several locations in which two far-left activists, Emilie Samira D. (21) and Moritz Sch. (21), were detained. The two are linked to the notorious German Hammerbande and were both allegedly involved in the February Antifa attack in Budapest, Magyar Nemzet reports.
An elite German police unit raided several homes in Leipzig and Jena at dawn on Wednesday. The operations were carried out by the Saxony State Criminal Police under the direction of the Dresden prosecutor’s office, Bild newspaper reported. The arrested suspects live in the Connewitz district of Leipzig.
The two captured alleged extremists are said to be the second or third generation of the notorious far-left terrorist group Hammerbande. Their methods and organization are reportedly similar to those of the RAF terrorist organization which used to kill and bomb in West Germany.
A series of attacks in Budapest in February saw a group of perpetrators, mostly foreigners, attack innocent bystanders because they were perceived to be far-right.
The only thing connecting the victims was their clothing – they were wearing either camouflage patterned clothes, black jackets, or so-called bomber jackets.
Because of these clothes, the assailants thought they were far-right and arrived in Budapest to celebrate the Day of Honor, commemorating the day when German and Hungarian troops attempted to break out from Buda on the evening of February 11, 1945. This is one of the biggest annual events of the far-right in Hungary, and people from abroad also usually attend.

According to the Hungarian investigation, the alleged attackers are Clara Wittkugel (22), Anna M. (26), Emilie D. (21), Moritz Sch. (21), Tobias E. (29)all from Germany, and Ilaria S. (38) from Italy. Four of the alleged attackers have been arrested so far: Tobias E., Anna M., Iliara S., and a 42-year-old Hungarian woman. The latter was recently released, and Anna M. has been placed under criminal detention, with the obligation to report to the Budapest police by e-mail every week.
The Budapest Police Headquarters is continuing to cooperate with its German and Italian counterparts, as well as the secret services and the anti-extremism units of the German and Hungarian Constitutional Protection Office, to investigate the case.
