The Hungarian Conservative think tank, Nézőpont Institute, has analyzed the first 100 days of President Katalin Novák’s term of office.
Katalin Novák was elected by parliament on March 14th and took office on May 10th.
In Hungary, the head of state is elected by the members of parliament, but she must also express the unity of the nation and represent Hungary. Nézőpont Institute has also conducted an opinion poll on the perception and popularity of the President.
Katalin Novák is moderately well known, 53 percent of the respondents were able to say the name of the President.
Fifty-two percent of informed respondents think that Novák is doing her job in line with the above-mentioned expectations, while 30 percent think the opposite.
According to Nézőpont Institute, Novák’s popularity is due to two factors: her innovative approach, and her respect for tradition.
The novelty of the new head of state is unquestionable: Novák is young (44 years old), a woman, and a mother of three. All three qualities make her unique among previous presidents of the Hungarian republic. These qualities are also the basis for her high social support, since as a mother, she knows and experiences the everyday problems of ordinary people with families.
As far as her office is concerned, the new president has not adopted all the habits of her predecessors, but has integrated from each presidency a feature that has defined the activities of the heads of state, and which can be highlighted as a positive aspect of the presidency. Her actions also reflect a conscious modernizing approach to traditions of the presidential office, running since the regime change in 1989.
