President of Hungary Katalin Novák will celebrate St. Stephen’s Day in Budapest and in Székesfehérvár, the coronation city of Hungary where St. Stephen himself was crowned in the year 1000.
On Saturday morning, the President of the Republic will participate in the ceremony in Kossuth Square in Budapest in front of the Hungarian Parliament to commemorate the founding of the state and its founder, King St. Stephen. The flag-raising ceremony will be followed by a public swearing-in ceremony for the newly graduated military officer candidates of the National University of Public Service.
Later in the morning, Katalin Novák will visit Székesfehérvár, where she will give a speech at St. Stephen’s Square. After the bread-consecration ceremony, she will participate in the wreath-laying ceremony of the equestrian statue of King Stephen, together with Mayor András Cser-Palkovics and Bishop Antal Spányi.
In the afternoon, the Head of State will present the medals of the Order of St. Stephen of Hungary and the Grand Cross of the Hungarian Order of Merit at the Sándor Palace, and at 5 p.m she will attend the festive Mass and the procession of the Holy Right, a Hungarian national and Catholic relic, presumably the naturally mummified right hand of King Stephen, at St. Stephen’s Basilica.
In the evening, in an unusual way, Katalin Novák will host transplanted children and their families at the Sándor Palace, where they will watch the fireworks from the terrace together with the employees of the Transplant Foundation.
All of Hungary is preparing for the August 20th celebrations and many programs await the public. The festivities started today, and according to the Hungarian Tourism Agency, there are more than 20 venues to choose from to suit everyone between August 18th and 21st to celebrate the founding of the state in Budapest.
During the St. Stephen’s Day celebrations, Budapest’s city center, the Buda and Pest quays, the Parliament and its surroundings, Gellért Hill, and many other locations will be transformed into a colorful and exciting hustle and bustle.
