Five concerts, including performances by the Hot Jazz Band, Echoes of Ellington, and Orsi Kozma, will be part of Müpa Budapest’s summer festival JazzTime from August 26 to 28.
This year’s program – from old Hungarian hits to the musical legacy of Duke Ellington and Barbara Streisand’s oeuvre – will feature a variety of styles, Müpa Budapest announced in a statement sent to MTI.
On the opening night of the festival, a specially created production, Echoes of Ellington, will be staged in the Festival Theater. The eight-piece ensemble will feature German, Dutch, English, and Hungarian artists performing a taste of Duke Ellington’s work. The works of one of the greatest composer-pianists in the history of jazz will be performed by Frank Roberscheuten.
The second day will feature the Reggie Jonas Jr. Trio and the Adrienne Bangó Quartet, both professional and audience award winners of this year’s Jazz Showcase, and will close with the Hot Jazz Band in the Béla Bartók National Concert Hall.
The band’s jubilee concert, Haccacáré, will be held on August 27th. The Hot Jazz Band celebrated their 35th anniversary in 2020, but due to the pandemic, they were not able to hold their anniversary concert until 2022. The band will make up for the missed anniversary with a series of guest soloists and orchestras,” according to the statement.
Among others, Katica Illényi and the Hungarian Banjo Kings will perform, as well as world champion tap dancer László Bóbis, and world champion swing dancer Gábor Janicsek.
On closing day, Orsi Kozma’s ‘Barbra Streisand! – and me?’ will perform the singer’s greatest hits, early, lesser-known songs, and legendary duets, the latter with guest Tamás Szabó Kimmel. The rich soundscape of the concert will be guaranteed by Orsi Kozma’s own orchestra and the Mendelssohn Chamber Orchestra of Veszprém, the statement reads.
This year’s festival will again be hosted by Béla Szalóky, who will also play the trombone in the Echoes of Ellington production on Friday.
