Aldi Store Managers May Earn More Than HUF 1 million after Recent Hike

Inflation, rising employment shortage, and the increase of the minimum wage are pushing wages further up in the commercial/retail sector as well. Aldi, known for high salaries, hiked its wages by 8%, which is above the official rate of inflation. Spar has also announced salary increases.

From 2022, minimum wages have been increased by almost 20%: the minimum wage has risen to HUF 200,000 (EUR 549) and the minimum wage for skilled workers to HUF 260,000 (EUR 713). This certainly pushes up other wages too, in addition to sky-rocketing inflation.

Aldi: 8% wage hike

True to its reputation of high salaries in the retail sector, Aldi hiked wages with an average of 8%. At the retailer chain:

• the starting salary of a new entry-level store clerk or logistics assistant working eight hours a day will rise to HUF 362,600 gross (EUR 996) from January 2022
• HUF 432,100 gross (EUR 1,186) from the sixth year of employment at Aldi.
• in addition, the highest available salary for this position is HUF 502,300 gross (EUR 1,379).

In the case of store managers,

• the minimum starting salaries is HUF 651,700 (EUR 1,789)
• a high-turnover store’s manager who has been fulfilling the post for 10 years, are now bagging some HUF 1,052,000 gross (EUR 2,888) per month from the 11th year of employment.

Spar also raises wages

Spar meanwhile announced they will provide their workers with salaries higher then the minimum wage. The German company has also said that it would invest some HUF 8.6 billion (EUR 23,6 million) into wage development in 2022.
