Viktor Orbán giving an interview about his trip to the United States

Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has addressed a letter to Hungarians abroad, which will be read out at events held throughout the Carpathian Basin and the world to mark Hungary’s national holiday on March 15th. Orbán stressed that Hungary must not give up a single shred of its national sovereignty for the sake of friendship or threats.

“In 1848, the Hungarian nation became the standard-bearer of freedom. The youth of March demanded not only responsible government, the abolition of censorship and equality before the law, but also the chance to live in a Europe whose nations wanted to rise together, side by side, not on the ruins of each other. They believed that freedom was not for its own sake, and certainly not the freedom of the strong over the weak, the majority over the minority, but above all to bring peace, security and prosperity to all people.

They have left us a spiritual legacy, sealed by their personal blood sacrifice, that we cannot relinquish a single shred of our national sovereignty for the friendship or threat of anyone,”

the Prime Minister wrote in his letter.

Orbán stressed that the light of the watch-fire of Hungarian freedom can still be seen far and wide. It proclaims that we Hungarians ask for and demand the return of a free, dignified, and strong Europe that has been able to keep peace on its own soil and has resolutely stood up against all overt or covert efforts to eliminate the languages and cultures of its indigenous minorities. “May there be peace, freedom and harmony!” the Prime Minister concluded.
