Hungary’s third musical road has been completed on the main road 21 between Hatvan and Lőrinci (Heves County, in the direction of Nógrád County), announced the Deputy State Secretary for Road and Railway Construction on Thursday at a press conference to inaugurate the project.

József Pántya recalled that since 2015, 45 kilometers of dual carriageway sections have been built or renewed on the main road 21 between Hatvan and Salgótarján. Several elements of the final road improvement project have been completed or are nearing completion, he said. Near Pásztó, bus shelters and CCTV cameras have been installed, 46 P+R parking spaces and 50 bicycle storage facilities have been created.

As the “crowning glory” of the improvements to main road 21, a 550-meter stretch of pavement between Hatvan and Lőrinci is offering a unique experience for motorists from now on, with a fragment of the song Nélküled by the band Ismerős Arcok playing while driving at 80 km/h.

Zsolt Becsó, Fidesz MP, the initiator of the project, pointed out in his speech that the musical pavement was the final touch to a quarter-century of improvements to main road 21.

He recalled that for 8-10 years prior to 2010, the main road 21, a major regional priority, had not received the attention it deserved from the government. However, in the last 14 years, this important transport corridor linking Slovakia with Hungary has been put back on the map, enabling these regions to join the economic circulatory system of our country and Central and Eastern Europe.

The entire project, commissioned by the Ministry of Construction and Transport and carried out by HE-DO Építő Zrt., cost a net of nearly HUF 1.77 billion (EUR 4.5 million).

The costs include the aforementioned bus shelters, pedestrian crossings, parking lots and bicycle storage facilities, cameras, a wildlife fence, the cleaning up of the Hidegvölgy watercourse, and the design and construction of the music pavement.

Fact

Hungary’s first musical road section was inaugurated on Road 67 in 2029: you can hear the well-know Hungarian rock band Republic’s song A 67-es út” (Road 67) as you drive through the rutted section (between Mernye and Mernyeszentmiklós, southwestern Hungary), best performed at 80 kilometers per hour.

In Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén County, a musical road section was inaugurated in 2022. Currently, a more comprehensive reconstruction of Road 37 is underway, including the completion of about ten kilometers between the Újharangod and Bekec (northeastern Hungary) junction. This includes the meters where the Hungarian folk song Érik a szőlő can be heard.
