MTI-Hungary Today 2024.01.23.

Short-track speed skater Dominik Major won the first Hungarian medal at the 4th Winter Youth Olympic Games (YOG) in Gangwon, South Korea, where he finished third in the 500m final on Monday.

According to the Hungarian Olympic Committee (MOB), Dominik Major, who won the 1000m B final on Sunday and finished sixth, followed the coaches’ instructions in the shortest event final and skated superbly to win the bronze medal.

I trusted that luck would be on my side, I came down to the warm-up with the feeling that we had to win a medal today. I moved well and I got the result,”

Major was quoted as saying by the MOB press release.

The other Hungarian in the event, Dávid Keszthelyi, fell in qualifying. In the girl’s event, Dóra Szigeti, like Major, made it to the A final with a confident performance, but slipped out to finish fifth. In the same event, Laura Diána Végi finished third in the B final and took eighth place overall.

“The youngsters did very well in the 500m, we worked hard for this bronze, and finally luck was on our side”, said Tamás Lakatos, the head coach of the national team. We expected a tough final, and it turned out to be a tough final, we were lucky to avoid the fall and we got the result, and I congratulate him. (…) There is one more event left, the relay, and we are doing pretty well, so I am optimistic.”

Alpine skier Milán Schneider was in the combined event and started well, finishing 15th in the super giant slalom, which is an outstanding result, as it was the second time in his life that he had competed in this event. The second half of the combination did not go well for him, as he slipped at the beginning of the very difficult downhill course. Schneider nevertheless completed the course and finished 28th.

The girls’ 3×3 hockey team played their first match on Monday at noon, winning 22-1 against Australia to remain unbeaten after four games.
