3 November was a big day in the Hungarian gastronomic scene, as the Michelin Guide Hungary, a restaurant guide for the whole of Hungary, was published on this day. In addition, Hungary won several Michelin stars and restaurants from the countryside were also awarded the prestigious accolade.
For the first time, the world’s leading restaurant guide has rated the whole of Hungary’s catering industry, meaning that the guide is no longer limited to Budapest. It is a great achievement that a restaurant in Tata, in the Center part of Hungary, has also won two Michelin stars in addition to a Budapest restaurant. A further six restaurants in the capital received one star, and a restaurant in Esztergom, north of Budapest, also won a Michelin star.
But it is not only Michelin stars that have been awarded to restaurants in Hungary, there is also the so-called Green Star. This was created by the Michelin Guide in 2020 for restaurants that are recognized for their efforts towards sustainability.
Previously, no restaurant in Hungary has received the Green Star award, but this year 4 restaurants, including two from the countryside, have earned it.
In addition to stars, the Michelin Guide has also awarded BIB Gourmand awards to restaurants that offer high quality food at a lower price, typically excellent bistros and family-run restaurants. Six restaurants from the countryside received such an award.
In addition, this year, the recommended restaurants included in the guide will be awarded a Michelin Plate, with 47 restaurants across the country achieving this distinction, 14 of them in Budapest.
