Roland Sallai’s Double Saves SC Freiburg from Relegation

SC Freiburg were on the brink of relegation in the UEFA Europa League, but Roland Sallai’s double helped the German side to bounce back and beat RC Lens 3-2 to progress to the last 16 of the league. Bendegúz Bolla’s side also progressed: FC Servette beat PFK Ludogorec Razgrad in the Conference League, reports Magyar Nemzet.

Roland Sallai could have been Freiburg’s hero last week if he had converted one of his two big chances against Lens in the Europa League. One of the Hungarian’s shots went over the top bar and the other was blocked by the French goalkeeper Brice Samba. In any case, the Germans had high hopes going into Thursday’s return leg, as the tie resumed from 0-0 in front of their home crowd.

As in the first match, Attila Szalai was benched, but Sallai was on the attack from the start.

Sallai created chances, but only the opposition scored – twice in the first half. Freiburg did not throw in the towel and Sallai really was a hero, his team recovered thanks to him. The Hungarian footballer equalized in the 67th and in the 92nd minute. In addition, Michael Gregoritsch scored another goal, helping the Germans to reach the last eight of the Europa League in the 99th minute.

The two happy Hungarian footballers of SC Freiburg were joined by a third. Bendegúz Bolla’s side, Servette FC, was aiming to reach the last 16 in the UEFA Europa Conference League. After a 0-0 draw at home to PFK Ludogorec Razgrad, a goal would have been enough for the Swiss side to progress. Timothé Cognat scored, and Bolla’s team reached the last eight, with their next opponents to be announced on Friday. UEFA is drawing the pairs of the next round of the Europa League and Europa Conference League today.
