During a press conference in Pécs (southwestern Hungary), the Minister of Public Administration and Regional Development, Tibor Navracsics, highlighted the government’s commitment to advancing the economic development of Southern Transdanubia.

Mr. Navracsics emphasized the importance of a comprehensive development program aimed at bolstering the economy of Baranya County and the broader southern region. He explained that the government’s focus on this area stems from the realization that while the northeastern region has experienced development, the southern part of the country still lags behind.

He noted the transformation of cities like Miskolc, Nyíregyháza (both in northeastern Hungary), and Debrecen (eastern Hungary) into industrial hubs, driven by modernizing transport infrastructure.

Recognizing the historical significance of Pécs as a regional economic center, Minister Navracsics acknowledged its decline over the past few decades. He stressed the government’s determination to reverse this trend by providing targeted support and implementing agreed-upon plans with local stakeholders.

The Minister outlined various infrastructure projects underway, such as the completion of the M6 motorway and the construction of the Mohács Danube bridge, aimed at boosting connectivity and tourism in the region.

Additionally, he highlighted the Mohács 500 program, which aims to commemorate historical events like the battle of Mohács in 1526, while fostering regional development.

Mr. Navracsics emphasized the potential for investments in Baranya County to enhance economic ties with neighboring countries like Serbia and Croatia, positioning the region as a gateway to the Balkans. He also discussed plans to elevate the role of Pécs airport and establish the “Pannonia Industrial Park” to further stimulate economic growth.

Looking ahead, the Minister envisioned new border crossing points opening up in the county with Croatia’s accession to the Schengen area, facilitating increased economic integration with southern regions. He expressed optimism about the region’s prospects for revitalization and economic prosperity, driven by government initiatives aimed at kickstarting growth and development.
