Newest Section of the M6 Motorway to Open in March

Hungary Today 2024.01.08.

The final section of the new motorway linking two countries will be opened in Hungary this spring, and in Croatia a year later. The M6 motorway and the Croatian A5 motorway are scheduled to merge in March 2025, reports Világgazdaság.

The new Hungarian section of the M6 motorway is scheduled to open in March 2024. This means that it will be possible to drive on this line as far as the Villány (southern Hungary) junction. In addition, the Croats have started construction of the motorway between the Hungarian border and Beli Manastir (Pélmonostor). The construction permit for the section between Kneževo (Főherceglak) and the border could be issued in Croatia by next spring.

Once completed, this highway will create a new road link between the two countries.

On other lines, it will not take so long to complete the work. As Világgazdaság understands, the construction of the motorway between Bóly and Ivándárda (both in southern Hungary) could be completed by the end of January this year. This section will then be connected to the Villány junction.

The Croats started work last autumn on the northbound section from Beli Manastir. The construction of this motorway will take 18 months, with completion expected in March 2025. The entire line will then be opened to traffic at the border. As this is the last missing section of the Croatian A5,

the M6 highway will be fully completed by the first half of 2025, creating a 300-kilometer-long continuous motorway link between Budapest and the Bosnian-Croatian border.

Fact

Since last summer, it has been revealed that the government will introduce a one-day motorway vignette in 2024. In 2022, the European Union voted to reform the transport and charging systems. This means that to ensure fair treatment of occasional road users from abroad, it will be possible to buy a vignette for a shorter period of time, up to one day. The one-day toll vignette will arrive on March 1, 2024 and will cost HUF 5,150 (EUR 13.6).
