Péter Szatmári, the chairman of the program council of Solution Movement (Megoldás Mozgalom, MEMO), the party created by one of the wealthiest Hungarians, György Gattyán, presented the main ideas of the party’s election program in a five-minute live broadcast on public TV channel M1 on Thursday.
Szatmári called the opportunity to make a single appearance on public media ten days before the election an ‘exceptional delight.’
According to Szatmári, the Solution Movement made history, as no other party since Hungary’s regime change was able to build a national network and a national list in almost all constituencies in just 90 days after its formation.
The politician said that they were proud to have two women among the top five candidates on their national list, because they believe it is important to get more women involved in politics and to be able to address women not only in everyday life but also in politics.
Regarding the party’s MP candidates, Szatmári said:
“Without any arrogance, I can say that we have almost every type, every character[…] From hairdresser to artist, from university student to lawyer, from teacher to carpenter, we have everyone.”
“Hungary needs change and solutions, that’s what Solution Movement will deliver,” Szatmári emphasized. They believe in civil society, are liberal, and reject extremism. “We stand in the middle,” he said.
Szatmári stressed that the party’s slogan of ‘heart, reason, and courage’ is not a mere coincidence, as they refer to the sectors where Solution Movement want to make changes. The heart represents healthcare, as the Covid pandemic showed just how bad the state of health of Hungarians is. As for the motto of ‘reason,’ it is important to see that Hungary’s intellectual capital is exceptionally strong compared to neighboring countries, education needs much more attention, and the party has the strength and courage to make real change.
György Gattyán, who made his fortune with the adult streaming site LiveJasmin, first hinted last November that he was thinking of running for office in the 2022 parliamentary elections. He finally declared his candidacy in December and announced the Solution Movement as his new party.
Many of his critics believe the billionaire’s participation in the elections serves no other purpose than to help governing Fidesz, as it can divide the electorate. Gattyán repeatedly denied these allegations, claiming he has no ties with the ruling party in any way. However, press reports reveal that several members and candidates of the Solution Movement have some sort of connection to the ruling party.
