Speaker of the Hungarian Parliament, László Kövér, rejected American accusations that Hungary is interfering in US domestic politics.

László Kövér reacted to last week’s Bloomberg article on Hír TV’s Bayer Show. The news agency called Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s tweet of support for Donald Trump following the arrest of the former US president an interference in US domestic affairs.

The Speaker of the Hungarian Parliament recalled that before and after the Hungarian elections in April 2022, the Hungarian opposition received billions of forints through a US NGO, Action for Democracy.

This was done in circumvention of the electoral law, as parties are not allowed to receive foreign funding, but the money was given to the NGO of the joint opposition candidate for prime minister, Péter Márki-Zay (who himself spoke about this last summer, triggering the scandal known in the conservative media as the “dollar left”).

According to Kövér, Bloomberg would be right to complain if Hungary had intervened to a similar extent in the US elections, but nothing of the sort happened.
