The stole, a liturgical vestment symbolizing priestly authority, presented to Pope Francis by President Katalin Novák, shows the richness of Hungarian culture.
Pope Francis received Hungarian President Katalin Novák at the Vatican today.
On Wednesday, President Katalin Novák posted on her Facebook page that she would bring an embroidered stole as a gift to the Pope. The stole was blessed by Cardinal Péter Erdő. As she wrote, the gift shows the richness of Hungarian culture and can be part of the Pope’s wardrobe.
The stole was designed by Dr. Károlyné Illés Anna Botyánszky, who was awarded the title of Master of Folk Art, and was the result of a joint effort by several embroiderers. The final stitches were made by Katalin Novák herself, under the guidance of the designer. The stole features well-known Hungarian folk motifs, among others from Nógrád and Békés counties.
In her Facebook post, the President thanked the designer and the embroiderers for making it possible for her to bring Pope Francis a present, which is “imbued with love.”
