Police Take Action against a Group Allegedly Plotting Armed Takeover

Hungary Today 2024.01.24.

In ten locations, 150 police officers took part in a coordinated operation against 11 people suspected of plotting an armed takeover in Hungary, reports Police.hu.

In November last year, a video was posted on a social video-sharing portal in which members of a group talked about the formation of “Scythian Hungary” and the arming of “national free military troops.” As the portal writes, the members of the group also said that both former and current members of the government would be arrested. They also stated that “the disarmament of the Hungarian police and the transfer of the military will take place soon.”

The National Bureau of Investigation (NNI) opened a case of preparation for violent change of the constitutional order. The members of the organization were identified and arrested at dawn on Tuesday. When planning the operation, it could not be ruled out that the members were in possession of firearms, so the NNI asked the Counter Terrorism Center (TEK) to carry out the raids.

In the operation carried out in the counties of Veszprém, Pest, Zala, Bács-Kiskun, and Budapest, about 150 police officers searched ten locations simultaneously. Eleven people were arrested, eight of whom were questioned as suspects by the investigators, and three men were detained.

During the search, detectives found handguns, ammunition, AK machine guns, gas and alarm weapons, as well as rubber bullet guns and air guns at several locations. The seized items also included various documents denying the existence of the Hungarian state and documents related to the organization known as “Scythian Hungary.”

The NNI staff also found documents issued by the organization to its members. These included identity cards, registration permits, and even documents proving diplomatic immunity. In addition to the seizure of the IT equipment of the members of the organization, the NNI has initiated the arrest of the three detained men.
