On Wednesday morning, police officers were tailing a black SUV with Bulgarian plates on the M1 motorway in Hungary. Footage of the chase shows the vehicles moving at a slow speed.
The SUV was carrying 14 people instead of the usual five, as the critically overloaded car made sluggish progress on the motorway.
When the police were finally able to stop the car, they found 13 illegal migrants inside who identified themselves as Indian and Turkish nationals.
As none of them could prove their legal residence in the country, they were taken to the county police station. The Bulgarian driver has been charged with human smuggling.
This is not the first time in Hungary that police have intercepted human smugglers on the motorway. In early November, officers chased vans carrying migrants at the entrance to another motorway, but the incident quickly escalated into violence after the smugglers started shooting at police. Fortunately, no one was injured and the perpetrators were quickly apprehended by police.
