Opposition PM Candidate Márki-Zay Asks for Campaign Donations

Hungary Today 2022.01.13.

After President János Áder announced the parliamentary elections for April 3rd on Tuesday, the opposition’s candidate for prime minister, Péter Márki-Zay, sent emails asking for support.

According to Telex, in the emails sent out, Márki-Zay writes:

“Today János Áder officially set the date for the parliamentary elections: we now know that April 3 will be the day of the fall of the Orbán government. We can now see the path ahead of us, but we also know that we will need everyone’s support to see it through. Therefore, I ask you, if you have the opportunity, to support the joint opposition campaign, to support the change of government, because we can only succeed together, but together we will succeed.”

Telex asked Márki-Zay what database they use to select email addresses. The response they received was that “the campaign sent out a micro-donation letter on the database legally managed by the Alliance for Unity in Hungary and Péter Márki-Zay, the candidate for prime minister, which was mainly built during the primaries.”

Márki-Zay has already said that he accepts money from anyone, anyone is free to transfer it to their campaign account, as long as the donor is not legally accused of a crime or it is not proven that the money is the product of a crime. He also said that “if Viktor Orbán himself would personally transfer money to my campaign account, I would be happy to accept it.”

As we have also reported, a few days ago, prior to the official announcement about the date of the election by President Áder, Prime Minister and Fidesz president Viktor Orbán also started sending out yellow checks in mailboxes, asking for donations to Fidesz for the “crucial elections” to help the fight against the “increasingly aggressive attempts of Brussels and the interfering Soros empire.”
