As the general elections are approaching, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán once again addressed ruling Fidesz’s supporters with a letter asking for money for the campaign. He expects financial support before “a crucial election” to help the fight against the “increasingly aggressive attempts of Brussels and the Soros empire to interfere.” The opposition slams the move and highlights the ruling forces’ much bigger budget.
According to the letter, accompanied by a check and signed by Viktor Orbán himself in the capacity of Fidesz’s president, “…we are facing a crucial election. The stake is no smaller than whether Hungary continues to move forward or it reverts to the Gyurcsány era of failures.”
“The world has changed with the coronavirus pandemic. We have entered an era full of dangers, where we have to deal with the epidemic, ever-increasing illegal migration, and the increasingly aggressive attempts of Brussels and the Soros empire to interfere. This fight requires not only heart, not only brains, but also strength. Our strength is our unity.
Next spring it will be up to us to decide which direction our nation will take. We must not turn back, Hungary shall move forward!”, he argues in the letter, referring to the latest slogan of the ruling forces (“Hungary is going forward and not backward”).
The Prime Minister is regularly addressing Fidesz supporters ahead of the elections, asking for financial support. 24.hu showed that the wording of this latest one very much resembles the one sent out before the elections four years ago.
In reaction, the opposition highlights that Fidesz controls a lot more funding, and about four times more advertising billboards than the opposition.
Right-wing opposition Jobbik’s statement was even harsher. “The height of impudence: Fidesz, which has been stealing the Hungarian people’s money for 12 years, is soliciting money from Hungarian people for its campaign,” they wrote, arguing that the money Fidesz collects will be then spent on the “most disgusting campaign ever.”
