Online Jazz Radio Station Will Be Launched by Public Media Services

MTI-Hungary Today 2024.03.13.

Public media is set to launch an online jazz radio station named “Szakcsi Rádió.” The station, available 24 hours a day, will undergo testing on March 15, with the official launch slated for International Jazz Day on April 30.

The radio station’s name honors Béla Szakcsi-Lakatos, a renowned Hungarian jazz musician and composer who received the Kossuth Prize among many other awards.

Anita Altorjai, CEO of Duna Médiaszolgáltató Nonprofit Plc., emphasized at the announcement event held on Tuesday at the Budapest Music Center (BMC) that promoting and showcasing Hungarian jazz is a significant public service task.

She noted that Hungary boasts world-famous jazz musicians and artist dynasties.

Ms. Altorjai highlighted the importance of preserving cultural heritage by making sound material accessible, and she mentioned reaching a consensus with prestigious jazz venues in the country on the necessity of a dedicated jazz radio station.

Dániel Papp, CEO of the Media Services and Support Trust Fund (MTVA), expressed the goal of establishing “Szakcsi Rádió” as a premier Hungarian jazz station in the Carpathian Basin.

He emphasized the genre’s significance, its cultural richness, and the need for a dedicated platform.

László Gőz, founding director of BMC, along with other notable figures in Hungarian jazz, including Attila Bognár and Tamás Szarka, are part of the professional panel behind “Szakcsi Rádió.”

Máté Esztergályos will serve as the editor-in-chief of the new online radio station, with Veronika Harcsa, who is an internationally known jazz singer, as the channel’s voice. The programming will include presentations on Hungarian jazz history, interviews with local jazz stars, and evening concerts featuring recordings from Hungarian and foreign musicians.

The launch event of “Szakcsi Rádió” was attended by top Hungarian jazz musicians.
