Bernadett Nagy won her semi-final match in the women’s 76 kg at the European qualification tournament for wrestlers in Baku, Azerbaijan, thereby qualifying for the Olympic Games in Paris.
The two-time European bronze medalist outclassed Italy’s Enrica Rinaldi in the first round on Saturday with a confident performance before defeating Belarus’ European U20 champion Anastasiya Zimiankova 3-0 in the quarter-finals. The Hungarian, who has missed almost two years due to a knee injury and returned to the top of the rankings with a bronze medal at this year’s continental championships, secured her place in the evening’s qualifying round with these two wins. In the semi-final, as in her bronze medal clash at the European Championships in February, she faced former European silver medalist Pauline Lecarpentier of France, but this time it was a flight to Paris that was at stake. The match ended in a 2-0 Hungarian victory.
I was not prepared for such a close match, I was not nervous. I cannot say I was in very good shape, but I expected an easier match,”
Nagy said in an interview with the Hungarian Wrestling Federation.
She added that sometimes she tends to rush, but on this day she took her coach’s advice and was patient and focused; despite this she could only win in close matches. She said that despite her long absence, she always believed she could make it to Paris and trained every day to do so, because “if you do not have something in your head to motivate you, you will never achieve your goal.”
Her coach Gábor Martin said that Nagy worked hard after her injury and gradually rebuilt her wrestling technique. Originally, they had planned to have her fit for the World Championship qualifiers, then aim for the U23 European Championships, but it was only for this year’s continental tournament and then the current tournament that it came together.
He believes that
Nagy is currently among the top three wrestlers in Europe in her weight class and is in the top half of the field at the World Senior Championships.
With the addition of Bernadett Nagy, the Hungarian wrestlers’ Olympic delegation has now increased to three. From last year’s World Championships, Ismail Musukaev earned a quota in 65 kg freestyle and Dávid Losonczi in 87 kg freestyle.
