Fact

St. Martin’s Day is celebrated on November 11. Folk traditions and beliefs on St. Martin’s Day are linked to the end of the year, the end of agricultural work and the approach of Advent. Customs are also associated with the legend that St. Martin tried to hide in a goose-coop when he was about to be elected bishop, but was betrayed by the geese’s noise.

According to tradition, large feasts are held on this day, as St. Martin’s Day is the last feast before the 40-day fast preceding Christmas, and dishes are typically made of goose. There is also an old folk saying linked the feasts: “If you do not eat goose on Martin’s Day, you will starve all year round.” After the goose dinner on St. Martin’s Day, it is customary to toast with a “Martin’s glass,” i.e. a glass of new wine. According to tradition, new wine on Martin’s Day is said to give you strength and health.
