On Tuesday, a cooperation agreement between the Ministry of Defense and the National Theater was signed by János Czermann, Deputy State Secretary for Strategy and Human Resources Policy of the Ministry of Defense, and Attila Vidnyánszky, Director General of the National Theater, at the Stefánia Palace, writes Magyar Nemzet.

It is important to stress that military culture is not only a historical memory, but also a guide in the modern world. Camaraderie, a sense of responsibility, and sacrifice are still key values for building a strong nation, noted János Czermann. He added that military culture and the artistic activities represented by soldiers, including military music, military and historical songs, are clearly part of Hungarian public culture, and are also important tools in defense education.

The aim and task is to present and pass on the fundamental values of patriotism and comradeship to young people,

contributing to deepening the sense of national identity and attachment of the individual, underlined Czermann, who also spoke about the importance of the Defense Cadet Program and the teaching of the subject of defense.

He recalled the large-scale and unusual performance of the Stars of Eger (based on the novel: Eclipse of the Crescent Moon), held on September 6, in cooperation between the National Theater and the Ministry of Defense, where over 6,000 secondary school students participating in the Defense Cadet Program recited the oath of the castle defenders together with Zolt Trill, who played the role of Captain István Dobó.

Fact

The Eclipse of the Crescent Moon by Géza Gárdonyi is a historical novel set during the 16th century, recounting the heroic Siege of Eger in 1552. It follows the courageous resistance of Hungarian defenders, led by Captain István Dobó, against the vast Ottoman forces. Rich in historical detail and patriotism, the novel has become a classic of Hungarian literature, celebrated for its vivid storytelling and depiction of national pride.

“We are convinced that the cooperation between the Ministry of Defense and the National Theater will contribute to the promotion of military culture. It also serves the realization of a future full of positive ideals that will shape the morals of generations and their worldview,” he concluded his speech.

The National Theater is linked to the Ministry of Defense by a realization that we serve the same purpose: to educate a new generation to love and serve their country,

pointed out Attila Vidnyánszky, Director General of the institution.

This was the goal we had in mind when we redefined the National Theater, and it was with this aim in mind that we put into repertoire such productions as the Stars of Eger, Ferenc Molnár’s The White Cloud, recalling the heroism of Hungarian soldiers of the First World War, and we also staged John the Valiant, which has already been seen by more than 250,000 students, the Director General underlined.

He added that the National Theater is determined to present performances in which the audience can identify with the protagonist and which convey values that build the country. In his opinion, “we need to introduce our own real-life heroes to our growing generations, rather than fictional characters from the Marvel universe.”
