The Hungarian Defense Forces are undergoing a complete transformation. A 21st century, NATO-compatible, world-class military force is being built in terms of military technology, in which a change of culture and attitude is also taking place, Minister of Defense Kristóf Szalay-Bobrovniczky said on Thursday in Balassagyarmat (northern Hungary).

Young Hungarians imbued with patriotism, a fighting spirit, and determination are replacing the uniformed workers of the peace force, who take this service more seriously than anything else, the Minister said at the Defense Sports Center. He told the young adults that if they decide to join this process, they will also be making a good decision for their personal lives, and they can go to bed every day with the feeling that they are serving a sacred cause.

“We need you, we need young Hungarians, we need more of you to realize that if we do not do something for our own protection, no one else will. This is the most important thing for us. Hungary, Hungarian culture, and the survival of Hungarian values – as our thousand-year history proves – are important only to us, and they are more important to us than anything else,” the Minister stressed.

He noted that five defense sports centers had been established in the country, and 149 schools were already running one of the most successful programs of the Defense Forces Development Program, the Defense Cadet Program, providing training for 9,500 young people in basic military skills.

All the knowledge and experience they gain from the program and the sports centers will pay off even if they do not choose a military career,”

he said.

At the ceremony, István Simicskó, President of the Defense Sports Association, said that the aim was to build sports centers in all counties of Hungary and that military obstacle courses were now being organized not only for secondary school, but also for primary school pupils.
