A geographer measured extreme winter conditions in the Bükk Mountains’ special karstic area that produce special microclimates.

Róbert Kerékgyártó has been making measurements in the Bükk Plateau (North Hungarian Mountains) since 2009. The data from the online measuring station he operates cannot be considered official, but that does not change the facts.

Fact

A ponor is a natural opening where surface water enters into underground passages; it may be found in karst landscapes where the geology and the geomorphology is typically dominated by porous limestone rock. Ponors can drain stream or lake water continuously or can at times work as springs.

It is worth remembering that in February 2021, one of the ponors recorded a shocking reading of -35.5 degrees Celsius, so cold that the water froze in a drip.

In the depths of the Red Meteor ponor, the minimum “was on sale” this morning. Tmin: -19.9 degrees. Of the other stations of measurement, East 1 was Tmin: -19.7 degrees and the minimum at East 2 was Tmin: -18.9 degrees Celsius, as posted on social media by the expert.

“The winds have weakened a lot, but have definitely not stopped. It was enough to prevent the formation of the characteristic classic ponor microclimate at the Red Meteor measurement site. If it did stop, it would have dropped to at least -25 degrees Celcius at the bottom of the ponor,” he said, adding that there was still no snow, but if there was, then it would certainly have been below -30 Celsius on the surface.
