The joint opposition suffered defeats in districts where they used to be successful, the by-elections show.
Eleven by-elections for local government representatives have been held in Budapest since June, Index reports. Of these, government candidates have won nine seats and opposition candidates two.
This came as a surprise, as the joint opposition was very successful in Budapest the local elections in 2019, and despite their poor national result in the general elections in April this year, they won in all but one constituencies in the capital.
One of the notable takeaways is that the parties if the joint opposition did not unite behind every candidate, and with the Democratic Coalition forming its “shadow government” lead by MEP Klára Dobrev, with their politicians only, the alliance’s future is in question.
