Moscow has not received any reaction from Western countries to Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s peace proposals on Ukraine, but is aware of the public responses, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters on Wednesday.
“There have been responses, and even public responses. As you know, the Europeans themselves are trying to condemn Orbán, they are trying to deny completely that he has any authority on this issue, and they are renewing their determination to help Ukraine on military matters. This is probably the answer,” Peskov stressed in response to a journalist’s question about whether the West had responded to Russia’s proposals.
Asked whether Moscow had had any contacts with the Hungarian side after Viktor Orbán’s peace mission, Dmitry Peskov recalled that
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjártó had met recently in New York.
“So these relations will continue,” the presidential spokesman added.
It has been repeatedly stressed that Donald Trump would end the Ukrainian war “within 24 hours” if re-elected in the 2024 U.S. presidential election. Turning to the issue, Peskov pointed out that in recent years Russia and Vladimir Putin had become an integral part of the campaign in the United States and were always a topic of debate. He described the U.S. sanctions against Moscow as illegitimate and harmful to both sides.
He noted that former U.S. President and current presidential candidate Donald Trump had imposed a number of restrictions on Russia during his administration, but that
there was dialogue between the two countries at the time, which was “one of the positive elements.”
It should be noted, however, that Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s efforts for peace may have initiated some progress in the negotiations between the West and Russia, as yesterday Swiss Foreign Minister Ignazio Cassis met his Russian counterpart on the occasion of the Russian presidency of the United Nations Security Council.

The Swiss politician informed Sergey Lavrov about the Summit on Peace in Ukraine, which was held on 15-16 June without Russia’s invitation. Before the event, the Swiss Foreign Ministry sent invitations to more than 160 delegations to discuss a just and lasting end to the war in Ukraine. Although the ministry argued that Russia should be included in the peace process, Moscow was not invited after Russian officials repeatedly indicated their unwillingness to attend the summit. Russia has previously argued that Switzerland cannot be considered a neutral mediator because it has joined EU sanctions against Moscow. The conference was initiated by Ukraine as in January, Switzerland announced that it would host a peace summit at the request of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, inviting delegations from the G7, G20, BRICS, the EU, and several international organizations.
