Hungary to Attend Ukraine-Initiated Peace Conference in Switzerland

Hungary Today 2024.06.07.

Hungary will attend the peace conference initiated by Ukraine, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó told the Russian state news agency TASS at the St. Petersburg Economic Forum, reports 24.hu.

Hungary will be represented at the foreign ministerial level at the event, which will take place next weekend in Lucerne, Switzerland.

So, I will represent Hungary. We will participate because we are totally pro-peace, and we will go to any event where peace is on the agenda,” Minister Szijjártó said.

He added: “a real result would be expected if everyone was at the negotiating table. This is not the case this time, but as we respect the peace efforts of the Swiss, we will participate at the ministerial level.”

The Swiss Foreign Ministry has sent invitations to more than 160 delegations to discuss a just and lasting end to the war in Ukraine. Although the ministry believes that Russia should be involved in the peace process, Moscow was not invited after Russian officials repeatedly indicated their unwillingness to attend the summit.

Previously, Russia argued that Switzerland could not be considered a neutral mediator because it had joined the EU sanctions against Moscow.

In January, Switzerland announced that it would host a peace conference at the request of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, inviting delegations from the G7, G20, BRICS, the EU, and several international organizations.
