Hungary Will not Extradite Conscripted Refugees to Ukraine

Hungary Today 2024.05.07.

Hungary does not investigate whether or not the Ukrainians consider someone to be a conscript, and will not let them to be sent to their death, stressed the Deputy Prime Minister, who is also responsible for national policy.

Now that Andriy Yermak, the head of the Ukrainian presidential office, is reportedly discussing the extradition of Ukrainians from EU Member States who are obliged to serve in the army, atv.hu asked Zolt Semjén about the government’s stance on the issue. He stressed: “Hungary will not extradite refugees to Ukraine. We will not investigate whether the Ukrainians consider a person to be a conscript or not. On the basis of basic humanity, we will not let them be sent to their death.”

The politician added:

In our country, all refugees from Ukraine are completely safe and receive all assistance, whether Hungarian or Ukrainian.”

Semjén said that for the Hungarians in Transcarpathia, this is also a natural national duty, and for Ukrainians it is a humanitarian and legal obligation, as no one whose life would be in danger can be extradited. The Ukrainian leadership wants their extradition “to send them to the war, to the front, where people are dying. So those who have fled to us from Ukraine are all safe, and they will not be extradited,” the Deputy Prime Minister confirmed.

Semjén made a similar statement on the issue last autumn, also in response to a request from atv.hu. At the time, he added that “every refugee from Ukraine in Hungary is a free person who is free to decide whether to stay here, go to the West, or return if he or she so chooses.”
