Hungarian Parties in Romania Form Strategic Alliance

MTI-Hungary Today 2024.03.21.

The Hungarian Democratic Alliance of Romania (RMDSZ) has solidified electoral pacts with smaller Hungarian parties in Transylvania, namely the Hungarian Transylvanian Alliance (EMSZ) and the Hungarian Civil Force (MPE), in preparation for the forthcoming 2024 Romanian elections.

These agreements underscore RMDSZ’s commitment to fostering unity within the Hungarian community, particularly for the European Parliament and national elections, while concurrently ensuring competitiveness in local contests.

The Hungarian community in Transylvania must show unity in the European Parliament and Romanian parliamentary elections, while the local elections will remain competitive,”

emphasized Hunor Kelemen, President of RMDSZ.

As per the agreements, both EMSZ and MPE will have their candidates featured on RMDSZ’s electoral lists, with collaboration extending to the municipal level. RMDSZ candidates receive backing from EMSZ and MPE in select constituencies.

The preamble [of the party] lays down the principles, including that political pluralism is seen as a democratic value by the parties and that the independent organizational identity of political communities is recognized and mutually respected,”

stressed Zoltán Zakariás, President of EMSZ.

The parties have also pledged to devise local coalitions and collaborative initiatives, guided by a committee including both parties to address regional exigencies effectively. Despite inherent differences, all parties are resolute in their shared aspiration for Hungarian unity and representation.

If we are talking about a national issue, we have to be able to put aside our differences… We’re not in love with the RMDSZ either, but we know that Hungarians have to unite,”

highlighted József Kulcsár-Terza, Acting President of MPE.

Furthermore, it’s imperative to note that the electoral timeline includes EP and local elections scheduled for June 9, with national elections slated for the autumn season. This strategic alliance underscores a collective endeavor to amplify Hungarian voices within Romania’s political landscape while simultaneously preserving community identity and interests.
