The Democratic Alliance of Hungarians in Romania (RMDSZ) has identified better standards of living for families and support for entrepreneurs, farmers, and municipalities as priorities at the start of the spring session of the Bucharest Parliament.

Following a joint meeting of its Senate and House of Representatives factions over the weekend, the RMDSZ established goals that include correcting the government’s austerity measures against entrepreneurs and farmers and restoring trust between central authorities and citizens.

According to RMDSZ, “agriculture cannot be the foster child of the state,”

and therefore Romania has a duty to implement laws that ensure predictability and sustainability for the agricultural sector and ease the restrictions on farmers.

Under the draft law, entrepreneurs would use a state-backed interest-subsidized loan to cover the down payment. This would occur when they are unable to pay their taxes due to delays in state payments, such as VAT refunds or sick-leave pay.

Additionally, RMDSZ aims to address the issue of forest land ownership, particularly land expropriated by the Romanian state under the communist regime.

They emphasize that property rights are not an ethnic issue and call for a legal framework to clarify ownership after 35 years.

The party asserts that the necessary legal basis for this was established last June, but the government decisions needed for restitution are still pending, with the RMDSZ giving priority to promoting this.

To support local authorities, the party plans to legislate for the government to finance investments from EU funds exclusively and in a timely manner. They also intend to take the initiative to lift recently introduced restrictions to help local authorities operate more efficiently.
